When people hear about antivirus and firewall software, they know that it’s software that is created to protect their computer. But they don’t know what the differences are between antivirus and firewall software, or if they are the same thing.

This is something that confuses a lot of people, so it’s a good idea to know exactly what the differences are and what the purposes of both antivirus and firewall software are.  That way you can protect yourself much better.

Basics of Firewalls

One of the first things that are important to understand when it comes to antivirus and firewall software is how firewalls work. They are programs that are created to try to block unwanted access and threats to a person’s network.  When a network is protected by a firewall has to pass the data that is going to enter or leave the network through the network’s firewall.  If that data doesn’t meet the security standards of the firewall, the message is going to be blocked.  Think of a firewall like a filter that is going to filter harmful things out.

Basics of Antivirus

The second thing that you should understand about antivirus and firewall software is the way that antivirus works.   Antivirus software is a package that is designed for scanning your files and your registry and make sure that there aren’t any malicious programs. If any programs are found, the software then tries to remove the threats that it finds.  They are able to search the computer actively and destroy any threats, and they also have good virus definitions which let them identify any specific threats.

Comparison of the Two

A lot of people are under the impression that antivirus and firewall software are interchangeable. That is, if they have one of them, they don’t need the other. This isn’t true. Both types of software are very important to the safety of one’s computer.  A good example of this would the idea of the air filter.  Think of the firewall as the air filter in a home.  Even though the air filter keeps a lot of bad things out, there is still the need for cleaning and dusting to keep the house clean.  The antivirus software is like the vacuum cleaner and the duster that you use to clean your home.

As you can see, having both antivirus and firewall software is very important for keeping your computer files safe.  Even though you may have one or the other for your computer and your network, you need both of them for optimal protection of your computer and your files.   Getting a virus is something that no one thinks is going to happen to them, but until you have a virus or have your identity stolen, you don’t know how important it is to ensure that you are protected.   Once your computer or identity has been compromised, it’s too late.  Yes, you may be able to fix the problem but your life is never going to be the same.
